A cage you would not hide. The AV06 concept puts a removable stainless liner at the centre, so the parts that get dirty come out — and the timber shell never has to.
Timber is porous. Once it absorbs waste and water it cannot truly be rinsed or disinfected — the reason wooden bird cabinets so often disappoint. The AV06 concept separates the two jobs: a stainless inner liner and pull-out pan take the mess, the timber shell stays furniture.
Planned at 40" W × 20" D × 64" H with 1/2" mesh spacing — suited to budgerigars, parakeets, lovebirds and cockatiels. A single spacing cannot suit every species; larger parrots need a different cage. We will not claim otherwise.
Mesh target is 304 stainless steel. Galvanized mesh is not used on this line — welded galvanized wire is a recognised source of zinc exposure in aviaries. Coatings belong only on exterior surfaces birds cannot reach, and must be fully cured. Ventilate 24–48 hours before introducing birds.

Most bird keepers make the same quiet compromise: the bird lives where the family lives, so a wire cage ends up in the nicest room in the house. Seed on the floor, a tray that never quite comes clean, and something you would rather guests did not look at. The AV06 concept starts from that compromise and tries to remove it.

Budgerigars, parakeets, lovebirds and cockatiels. Spacing that is too wide risks a bird trapping its head — so we state one spacing and one species range rather than claiming the cabinet suits “all birds”.
No. Welded galvanized wire is a recognised source of zinc exposure in aviaries. Other Fernstead lines use galvanized hardware cloth; this line does not, and will not.
The intent is that they cannot. Coatings are planned only for exterior surfaces outside the enclosure. Any finish must be fully cured, and we advise ventilating 24–48 hours before introducing birds.
The stainless liner and pull-out pan are designed to be removed and rinsed. The timber shell is not intended to contact waste at all — that separation is the whole point of the concept.
Species selection is still being confirmed against avian safety guidance. Cedar, oak, cherry, walnut and redwood are excluded. Until a species is confirmed with documentation, we will not state one.
