A Fernstead walk-in catio in a backyard garden

Backyard structures for pets & gardens

Give the backyard back to the animals who live there.

Fernstead builds catios, coops, hutches, kennels and raised beds the way a good garden building is built — kiln-dried solid wood, galvanized mesh, a real pitched roof, and a manual you can actually follow.

The collection

Five structures, one backyard

Every Fernstead structure is built on the same frame system, in the same finishes, so a catio, a coop and a raised bed look like they belong to the same house.

Outdoor Cat Enclosures

FERNSTEAD Catio CW01

A 76-inch walk-in catio built from solid fir, galvanized hardware cloth and a real corrugated metal roof. Two full-height doors, three levels, and a rainproof shelter zone.

$299.00$349.00

Chicken Coops & Runs

FERNSTEAD Coop RB02

A walk-in barn-red coop and run for 8-12 birds, with a raised hen house, four nesting boxes, and a full-height human door you can actually stand up in.

$529.00$599.00

Rabbit Hutches

FERNSTEAD Hutch LW03

A two-story hutch with a full ground-level run, natural light wood finish, deep pull-out tray and a ramp your rabbit will actually use.

$239.00$279.00

Raised Garden Beds

FERNSTEAD Grow GB04

A 4x4 raised bed with a rigid hinged mesh canopy built in — not a floppy fabric cover. Keeps rabbits, squirrels, deer and cabbage moths out; lifts open for planting.

$249.00$289.00

Dog Houses & Kennels

FERNSTEAD Den DH05

An insulated, raised, solid-wood dog house with a covered porch, door flap and hinged roof — built for dogs that are actually outside in January.

$169.00$199.00

Why Fernstead

Built for the weather, not for the photograph

01

Kiln-dried solid fir

Not particle board with a wood-look wrap. Kiln-dried solid fir, finished in a water-based exterior coating that will not flake off in the first winter.

02

19-gauge galvanized mesh

Hardware cloth, batten-strapped at every edge. Chicken wire keeps birds in; it does not keep raccoons out. We use the heavier stuff everywhere.

03

A roof that sheds water

Pitched corrugated steel with an overhang, not asphalt felt stapled to plywood that sags and leaks by the second season.

04

Assembly you can finish

Every panel is laser-marked to match a full-color printed manual, with a QR code to a step-by-step video. Two people, under an hour, on most models.

Our story

The fern and the homestead

Fern for the green things that grow in the shade of a yard. Stead for a homestead — a place with a fence, a gate and animals in it. Fernstead is the point where those two meet: the part of a home that lives outdoors.

We started with one frustration. If you want a cat enclosure, a chicken coop or a covered raised bed that will still be standing in five years, you either pay a carpenter thousands of dollars or you buy something flat-packed that arrives warped, unmarked and short of screws.

So we build the middle. Real materials and real joinery, made in our own woodworking factory, packed into cartons a person can carry, with instructions written by someone who has actually assembled the thing.
